THE POET

South Shore Opera Company

Steven M. Allen's "lush" and "ravishing" chamber opera THE POET is an excerpt from his larger work LYRICS OF SUNSHINE AND SHADOWS, based on the lives and love of poets Paul Laurence Dunbar and Alice Ruth Moore, the first African-American elite couple, as they struggle to pursue their ambitions within the context of post-slavery America.

“Allen’s opera is a gorgeous celebration of Dunbar, meticulously thought-out and rendered in a wide variety of musical styles attractively juxtaposed and weaved together....

Stage Director Amy Hutchison did a stupendous job in bringing this story to life. This production was a home run for the South Shore Opera Company of Chicago."
